As I am sure you all know, I am obsessed with Dogs. So much so, I have three of them! However, on a recent trip to out of town, I discovered my fascination with cats. Growing up, my family has only ever had dogs, so I never experienced what having a cat was like.
Whilst on vacation, we met a yellow-eyed, black cat laying under our car. She was sweet and non-demanding. I tried feeding her a slice of salami, which she didn’t want, obviously. She was an absolute cool cucumber, and Iwas smitten. For the next week, all I could talk about and obsess over was cats. I began extensive research on cats up for adoption, and had various conversations with my husband about them, too.
Keep in mind, my husband has had cats before. While we are both animal lovers, he hates the litter box, and I do not blame him. I am not going to lie, the smell is pretty terrible, but we will get into that later.
After much research, I found that there are a lot of kittens and adult cats up for adoption and needing homes in the DFW area. I looked into various cat rescue groups, and if you are thinking of adopting a cat, please make sure you do your research. Every organization is different.
While all of the groups I looked into require an application, only some of them require home visits. I searched all over the Dallas, Garland, and Rowlett animal shelters. I even looked into the New Beginnings Cat Rescue, Texas Cares, and the Feral Friends Community Cat Alliance.
My husband has been supportive of adopting a cat from the very beginning. We visited with some of the kittens at the Petco in Garland, and I was smitten.
On Friday, we picked up silver tabby Daria, and brought her home for a two week trial. We have dogs, so a two week trial was the best option for us at this moment. We wanted to make sure that she and our dogs are comfortable around each other before giving a complete yes.
While we have only had Daria for three days, they have been interesting and nothing short of exciting.
She is the biggest cuddle bug I have ever met. Her kneading and purring kills me every time.
She absolutely loves rubbing and kneading all over me all while purring. While we are taking things slow, she is somewhat hesitant around the dogs. We are learning however. If you are thinking about adopting a cat, I definitely recommend researching on introducing your animals to each other. The last thing is you want for all of the animals in your household to be unhappy.
This is also a reminder to be patient! With cats and dogs, it can be instant, or it can take weeks before they are comfortable around each other. Sometimes it does not work at all.
Daria has been a pretty good girl the last three days. We created a safe space for her in our master bathroom as it is a lot more safe than roaming around our house while we are not home.
She’s a really good girl when it comes to using the litter box. From what I understand, she’s much more clean than other cats. While she does track some litter out of the box, she likes to be tidy. I will advise that if you have a cat, to get a good litter trapping mat. IT’S A GAME CHANGER YOU GUYS!
The mat we bought from amazon is large enough to hold a large litter box, and while she does track some litter onto the floor, most of it gets stuck in the small holes on the mat. While you can dump the litter back into the box, it’s been super easy to vacuum it up with our Dyson.
From what little time we have with Daria, she definitely likes a clean litter box, so I have been cleaning it out anywhere from two to three times a day. Some of that has to do with the fact that I can’t stand the smell when she’s been to the bathroom. Maybe she’s just a bit smelly, or maybe it’s the cat litter I am using. Have you used SoPhresh litter? Is there a better brand you recommend?
She is also extremely confident and playful. When picking out a furry friend for yourself, you have to visit with them to find out what kind of personality works for you. Daria has a sister named Monique who is such a cutie, too! However, Monique is much more shy.
Daria loves toys that you can whip around like yarn and fabric. She loves to jump and pounce on toys and it is the cutest thing ever. Beau actually bought a package off of amazon with a bunch of toys for only $12 and it is so worth it.
She does not bite unless she is feeling over stimulated. When that happens, I usually leave her in the bathroom with the lights off to relax a bit and she has been wonderful. She is definitely inquisitive and sassy.
She even has her own window perch, which she isn’t completely comfortable with yet, but she’s learning to use it.
As for food, you have to find what works for you. Her foster mom gave us some dry and wet food and said that kittens tend to change their mind often about food. I have been giving Daria a combination of wet food (wellness and fancy feast) and also Nutro dry food which she loves.
While she does sleep in the bathroom at night, she has again been such a good girl. I am not quite sure if we are keeping her yet as we are still waiting to see if she and the puppies get along, but we still have some time to figure that out.
If you are in the market to bring a kitty into your household, I highly recommend adoption, but remember to do your research.
Do what works for you, but don’t hesitate to try something new! I have never had a cat before, but this has definitely been a wonderful experience for far, and I cannot wait to see how the next few days go!
